Haverhill Tennis Club Annual Closed Tournament (2015-09-09)

Haverhill News

Haverhill Tennis Club held its annual closed tournament final’s day on Sunday 6th September and the crowd of spectators were rewarded with some excellent tennis. In all of the main adult events only one title was won by last year winners. The juniors started the day off with Luke Marsh overcoming a determined Thomas Parrett 6-3, 6-4, regaining the 12U trophy he has won for the past 3 years. Andreas Kitsis played some great tennis against last season’s winner Sam Howard in the 16U, but Sam’s consistency and power proved to be too strong for Andreas. Sam won 6-0, 6-1. Six time ladies singles champion Abi Cartwright-Thomas played one of Haverhill’s up and coming juniors Keri Tobin, Abi got off to a flying start and saved a few game points to lead in the first set 4-1, but Keri kept her nerve to win a very tight first set 7-5, in the second set Keri proved what a fine tennis player she is becoming and at times over powered Abi, eventually winning 7-5, 6-1. Abi showed what a fine sportswomen she is by complimenting Keri on a fine match. In the Men’s final Joshua Dashwood was hoping to make it 3 years in a row against Gratz Senn, having beaten Gratz in the last two finals. Gratz played some great tennis and some of the rallies were of a very high standard. On the day Gratz’s consistency proved to be the difference on this occasion, winning 6-2,6-2. In the Men doubles final it was all new pairings with Tom Marsh and Sam Howard playing Gratz and Nigel Fitch. Gratz and Nigel volleyed extremely well and despite some brilliant passing shots by the younger pair, Gratz and Nigel’s experience showed winning 6-3,6-3. Ladies doubles champions from last year Rachel and Sarah Jeffs played Sarah Lee and Marcia Armstrong in a very close final. Rachel and Sarah won a tight first set 7-6 in the tie break but failed to keep the momentum going losing the next 2 sets 6-2, 6-4. In a late finish Joshua Dashwood and Marcia Armstrong retained their mixed doubles title beating Abi Cartwright –Thomas and Adam Fowle with a solid display 6-4, 6-2. Consolation winners on the day Jim Dalby bt John Anderson 6-4, 6-4 in the men’s singles. The ladies singles was stopped because of injury to one of the players and will be played at a later date. Jim Darby then teamed up to play with Chris Clayden in the doubles against Peter Cundall and Brian Bentham winning convincingly. The mixed match was very close but husband and wife pair Sarah Lee and Per Strid beat Tom Marsh and Amy Gardener 7-6, 6-3. This was a very successful summer competition played on a glorious summer’s day.
