Matt Hancock calls for better disabled access in Haverhill
Friday, 18th September 2015.
Matt Hancock MP has given his support to a Haverhill teenager’s campaign to improve disabled access in the town, as he nominates her for a national award.
Local resident Katie Donno, aged 16, is campaigning for better accessibility in Haverhill, and has made a video documenting the difficulties she faces in moving around the town centre.
Matt has written to John Griffiths, the leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, calling on him to improve disabled access in Haverhill. He has also nominated her for a Kids Count ‘Inspire the House’ award, which allow MPs to nominate young people who have made a difference to their community.
Speaking, Matt said:
“Katie is doing fantastic work in highlighting the struggles that disabled people face in Haverhill. Too many don’t stop to think about the problems presented by narrow aisles, cobbles or high kerbs. Katie’s video makes plain how hard it is to get around the town and I am delighted to give her campaign my full support.”
“I have nominated her for the ‘Inspire the House’ award because Katie’s campaign could make a real difference to Haverhill if she gets the right support. I am inspired by her efforts to raise awareness and to try and change the town centre for the better.”
“Decisions about accessibility have to be taken by the local council which is why I am calling on John Griffiths to take action. I look forward to working with him to tackle the problem of disabled access and I hope that we see real improvements in Haverhill soon.”
