British World War II veterans to be honoured with special medals ceremony for their service in the arctic convoys
Thursday, 10th September 2015.
Around 30 British World War II veterans are to receive the Ushakov medal at a special ceremony on Monday 14 September at Suffolk County Council, Endeavour House, Russell Road, Ipswich, marking their participation in the historic arctic convoys undertaken by allied forces during World War II.
The medals will be presented by senior diplomats of the Russian Embassy at the decree of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.
After initial refusal by the Foreign Office for these foreign medals to be awarded, a concerted campaign was undertaken last year and the Foreign Office allowed an exception to the rule. President Putin presented the first medals during his visit to London in June 2014.
This is the only event of its kind taking place in Suffolk. Some veterans from Norfolk are also joining the ceremony.
Clare, Countess of Euston, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk will be in attendance alongside Suffolk County Council’s Chairman Cllr Jane Storey.
