Town plan “should reflect needs”
Thursday, 21st February 2002.
A town plan based on what the “man in the street” would like to see in Haverhill is due to be drawn up by the town council.
Gordon Mussett, Haverhill town clerk, told members of the Haverhill Partnership Group that funding was available from the Countryside Agency, but details were still awaited on exactly how the plan should be prepared.
Mr Mussett said the consultation involved would be far more wide-ranging than the recent social impact study on Haverhill gaining as many responses as possible.
“It would be more about what the residents and people of the town felt is needed, rather than just what is achievable.
“We would be trying to collect comments you might hear on the street corner or in a pub, that never actually get reported to a meeting like this,” Mr Mussett said.
Gerry Keirnan, chairman of the partnership said such a plan would take a long time to prepare and he felt people in the town would want to see some action soon.
Nick Keeble, Haverhill Town Council’s leisure manager, said there was not that much land left in Haverhill without planning permission and he felt the town has “missed the boat” in trying to get facilities as a result of development.
“It was thought it might happen on the open market, but it hasn’t. We have missed the boat hundreds of times, it has left the dock.” Mr Keeble said.
