Jubilee Walk Improvement Scheme Postponed...

Thursday, 12th October 2006.

The improvement scheme planned for Haverhill’s Jubilee Walk has been postponed until January to ensure trade is not disrupted during the run up to Christmas.

A decision was taken to review the timetable for works after St Edmundsbury Borough Council was approached by several retailers and Haverhill’s Town Centre Manager Nick Martin. It was felt the project would need to be complete by 1 December to avoid any impact on trading, but technical delays forced a rethink.

The project, which will see around £460,000 spent on installing new seating, handrails and bus shelters and on landscaping and resurfacing work, will now begin in January and should take around two months to complete.

Cllr Jeff Stevens, Deputy Leader of St Edmundsbury and Chairman of the Haverhill Area Working Party, said: "A successful Christmas trading period is essential for the economy of any town, which is why we felt postponing the enhancements at Jubilee Walk was the best course of action to take. The improvements at this busy gateway into Haverhill will still go ahead, but not at a cost to the local community".

As part of the enhancement project, an electronic board showing information to bus passengers will be installed along with several pieces of public artwork – including a sculpture to Owen, a popular cat who used to live in the area.
