History
Iron age remains have been found in and around Haverhill. There is clear
evidence of Saxon and Roman settlements in the town and a Roman Road passed
through the town.
Haverhill market was recorded in the Domesday
book in 1086. Haverhill relied on spinning, weaving and agriculture through
the 18th and 19th centuries and from the 1870s the Gurteen family textile
factory caused a large increase in the population of the town.
In the 1950s a new period of growth was started
by the Greater London Council’s town expansion scheme which continued
until the 1970s.
Now
Haverhill is now a modern town with an excellent sports centre, arts centre
and golf course. There are many local organisations, clubs and societies
including : football (men and women), rugby, swimming, hockey, cricket,
bowls, operatic, choral, silver band and orchestra.
