Memories of Haverhill - Cangle School - Malcom Thomas

A couple of things I remember about Cangle though, was the dinner routine and the morning break tuck shop. Each day in the playtime before lunch we had to line up in the playground and collect our 'dinner disk' . These were numbered squares of plastic handed out to the students - each student had his own disk, the same disk every day. When lunch time came we had to march upstairs to the huge canteen at the back of the school - carrying our disk tightly - if we lost it we didn't get fed ! We all sat down at the large tables, eight or ten to table. There was a huge rush for the tables near the serving hatch because if 'seconds' was called, you needed to be close to get any.
Anyway, we had to go up to the servery in an orderly fashion in table sequence to get our meal. If it was Monday (or Friday, I can't remember), we had to place our 7/6 on the end of the table to pay for the weeks meals. So, when it was your turn to eat you handed in your disk and collected your meal. Always two courses and plenty of it. All this palaver because some kids would sneak more than one meal - yes the meals were very good back then !
The Tuck Shop was great, you could get Wagon Wheels for 6d, two ginger biscuits for a penny or a pack of Potato Puffs for 3d. Some days you could get those little Golf chocolate biscuits which came with the free cricket cards; they were very popular. The only problem was the queue was so long that the playtime was almost over by the time some of us got served.
