Your chance to help hold on to local shops

Thursday, 22nd May 2014.

Haverhill residents are frustrated and saddened at the number of local shops and services that have closed down or moved out of town recently are being offered a chance to help halt the slide.

From June 2-8, thebestof Haverhill, a local company which champions recommended independent businesses in the area for the benefit of residents and businesses alike, will be running its annual Buy Local campaign.

The core element of the campaign is to encourage people to think about where they spend their money. Changing how, and where, we shop can make a huge difference to the local economy, organisers say.

Elaine Carr, owner of the bestof Haverhill, said: “We have some wonderful independent shops and businesses in our area and it is important that we don’t take them for granted. ‘Buy Local’ reminds us that these businesses need the support of residents and local policy makers.

"With everyone committed to supporting local business, combined with a loyal and active community, we can buck the trend of empty shops.

"High streets without a variety of shops and services lack life, vibrancy and that all-important pint of milk!

"Look out for the Buy Local stickers, posters, flyers, balloons, shopping bags and bunting over the next few weeks and come and talk to us at our stall on the market on Saturday, June 7.”

Local people who visit www.thebestof.co.uk/haverhill to pledge their support during the Buy Local week will also be entered into a daily prize draw.

Every day, for seven days, five lucky supporters will win £100 to spend at a great thebestof local business.

Business owners or residents wishing to display a Buy Local sticker or poster, or who want to get more involved, should contact Elaine Carr via the website www.thebestof.co.uk/haverhill or call 01440 710158.
