Youngsters to step out for Playcentre
Thursday, 16th May 2002.
Youngsters at a Haverhill Playcentre will be putting on their walking shoes soon to take part in a sponsored walk to raise money for a minibus.
Cartwheels Playcentre in Camps Road has a long waiting list for places and is desperately trying to expand to another site.
To make expansion plans work the group needs a minibus to collect children from schools in the town.
At present staff members walk to collect youngsters from three schools in Haverhill.
Those who attend other schools have to come by taxi, which adds to the expense for parents and is not ideal for children as young as seven years. On May 24 children aged from two to four years will be taking part in the sponsored walk from the Playcentre to Haverhill Market Square.
There, the group will be presented with a cheque from St Edmundsbury Borough Council before walking up to the Arts Centre and back to the Playcentre.
Staff member Jacqui Prior said they were hoping to collect donations from local businesses and the public on the way.
“We have an extensive waiting list and the expansion would enable us to provide more childcare. We are the only provision of this type in Suffolk.
“With the expansion we would be able to care for children aged from 0
up to 12 years, enabling parents of babies to return to work as soon as they feel necessary.
“At present child care for under twos is very limited, so this is a need of the local community,” Jacqui said.
The group has seen a suitable site and set up a steering committee to work on the project.
Cartwheels provides full day care from 8am to 6pm on Monday to Friday for 51 weeks of the year, for children aged two to 12 years. This includes breakfast clubs, school escorts, playschool, after school and holiday clubs.
Anyone who can help with the fundraising effort should contact the Playcentre on (01440)763232.
