Young athletes at Haverhill Striders Club are looking forward to more success on the athletics track this summer after winning trophies at the end of the recent cross country season.
The cross country success was gained in the club’s first season in the Shouldham Gran Prix Series, when eight-year-old Dutch runner Alexander Westdijk won five out of six races in his age group and took the overall trophy.
The club also took the trophy for best newcomer and most improved club and Luke Cox took a silver medal in the under 13 age group.
The two youngsters continued their winning ways at the Linton Fun Run, when Alex finished sixth overall and Luke was third in his age group.
The club was due to start its track and field event at the weekend with an open event at Chelmsford, followed by relay events at Bury St Edmunds on April 16. It will compete in the East Anglian league for the first time this year, with the first event on April 24.
Mabon Dane, a Striders coach, said the youth membership was growing each week and added: “We have got a lot of youngsters who show great promise for the future”.
