Young stars come of age in Elvis musical

Tuesday, 20th October 2009.

The curtain goes up tonight (Tuesday) on a spectacular youth musical at Haverhill Arts Centre which represents the climax of a 12-year programme by the town's Centre Stage Company.

All Shook Up, a musical which takes numerous hit numbers of Elvis Presley and blends them into a story of mixed-up young lovers that owes something to Shakespeare, opens tonight and runs until Saturday.

The show features a cast of over 40 aged between 11 and 18, many of whom have come through a programme of musicals produced by the company over the past five years.

This has been the second cycle of youth shows produced by the group, but All Shook Up has been directed and choreographed by two of the original children's cast from the first cycle which began with The Wizard Of Oz and Annie back in 1997/8, Amy Letcher and Becca Neal.

Several of this week's performances are already sold out, but tickets are available tonight and tomorrow (7.30pm starts) and Saturday's matinee (2.30pm start).

Centre Stage Company began life over 40 years ago as Haverhill Operatic Society, and it's long-time musical director, and last year's Haverhill town mayor, Les Ager, has a family interest in this week's show.

The musical director of All Shook Up is his daughter Karen Chinery and one of the stars is her daughter Lauren.

Playing opposite her as the musical idol who brings a 1950s town to life is Lee Mayes, grandson of the group's accompanist for 40 years, Greta Mayes.

To get tickets to see this defining moment of youth drama in Haverhill, you can contact Haverhill Arts Centre box office on 01440 714140.
