Thursday, 20th June 2002.
Marc Abbott will join 12 other young soccer hopefuls at Cambridge City’s youth academy when they begin pre-season training at the start of next month.
Abbott, of Haverhill, is a central midfielder who played in City’s under-16s last season after a spell with Nationwide League, Division Two club Peterborough United.
He and his fellow new recruits will take part in the Harlen Cup with the club’s second-year academy students in late July.
The new boys will move to the city on September to start daily training and their two-year course at Cambridge Regional College.
Jex George, City’s youth development officer, said: “potentially, this is the strongest group of players that we have signed for the academy.”
“There are a number of talented players, which is exciting for the club.”
Haverhill United FC will hold a five-a-side tournament on July 14 at Chalkstone Playing Fields.
Teams have been invited to enter the competition, with under-eights to under-15s scheduled to play in he morning and men in the afternoon.
There will be a barbecue, licensed bar, dinky doughnuts, ice creams and a teall stall among others.
