World Book Day brings out some right characters
Thursday, 29th April 1999.
SOME strange looking characters turned up for classes at Westfield Primary School, in Haverhill, as pupils dressed up as their favourite story book characters for World Book Day.
Pupils found themselves being taught by Winnie the Pooh and Cruella Deville as teachers joined in the event, which is the second to be held nationally on Shakespeare’s birthday. One pupil, Josh Porter, pictured right, dressed up as the Scarecrow from the
Wizard of Oz for the occasion.
All 118 pupils joined in, as well as nursery pupils, and there were story telling sessions by Brenda Martin, manager of Haverhill Library, and other visitors during the week.
The school is celebrating a highly favourable OFSTED report, in which pupils’ enthusiasm for reading is one of the items noted.
