Workshops for borough growth

Monday, 17th June 2002.

A workshop is to be held in Haverhill to gather the views over plans for growth in the borough over the next 15 years.

Residents, businesses, organisations and service providers from across Haverhill and Bury St Edmunds are being invited take part with the results helping to guide the Council’s decisions about identifying land for new homes and jobs as it prepares a new Local Plan for the Borough.

Despite a recent Council study to identify land suitable for housing within the built up areas of Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill, there is still a need to find land on the edge of each town for a total of 1,800 new homes to meet the growing population of the Borough to 2016. There is also a shortage of land for jobs in Bury St Edmunds and a potential long term shortage in Haverhill.

Cllr Mike Ames, Cabinet member for Development, said: "Where the Council builds the next generation of homes and businesses is something which concerns the whole community and I hope people will take this opportunity to have their say."

The workshops are being held in Haverhill on 2 July and Bury St Edmunds on 8 July. Delegates at the day-long events will be invited to consider how the towns will look in the future and where the new development should be built.

A limited number of workshop spaces are available, on a first-come-first-serve basis, and places can be reserved by telephoning 01284 757367 or e-mailing localplan@stedsbc.gov.uk . Reservations must be made by Tuesday 25 June.
