Work starts on bowling alley
Thursday, 27th May 1999.
WORK has started on a long awaited ten pin bowling alley at Haverhill, which is due to open in the autumn.
An extension is being built at Haverhill Snooker Club in Chalkstone Way to accommodate eight tenpin bowling lanes. This week, Delstore Limited submitted a revised application to St Edmundsbury Borough Council to make the extension slightly larger.
David McPherson, an architectural consultant for the firm, which already has planning consent for the extension, said the revised plan simply added another 6.5 feet.
Mr McPherson said the planning authority had requested the extra space to make sure there was enough room for the pin setting coven the back of the building.
The company has a scheduled opening date of late September to early October; if building work goes as planned. It operates a similar snooker and bowling centre at Newmarket.
Several surveys in Haverhill have shown a bowling alley to be high on people's wish list, but previous plans have not gone ahead.
Jackie Smith, St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Youth and Development Worker, said a ten pin bowling alley had been high up on a wish list survey she had compiled with youngsters in Haverhill.
"It was certainly something suggested by the youngsters," said Mrs Smith.
