Woman fights off attacker

By Dan Grimmer on Thursday, 22nd March 2001.

POLICE are hunting for a man who viciously attacked a woman as she walked home after a night out in Haverhill.
The woman, in her early 20s, was tripped up, punched and kicked by her attacker before she managed to fight off the man and flee.
The unprovoked attack happened in Mill Road between 12.30am and 12.40am on Saturday, near to the junction with Recreation Road.
The woman was walking along the road to get home from the town centre when she was tripped from behind. She was punched in the face and forced to the ground, where her assailant then kicked her again.
But the victim managed to fight her attacker off and fled.
A car was passing the scene at the time of the attack, which police believe may have disturbed the attacker.
It was travelling from the direction of the Clements estate and police are keen to trace the driver who they think may have seen the attack.
The woman was treated for her injuries at Addenbrooke's Hospital before being released.
Her attacker is described as white, possibly wearing a blue jumper and a zip-up jacket.
Anyone with information, or who was in the area at the time, is asked to contact police.
Haverhill police can be contacted on (01284) 774100 and Suffolk police are on (01473) 613500.
