West Suffolk head of planning to speak to World audience
Monday, 19th October 2015.
From Buenos Aires to Bury St Edmunds, and Milan to Mildenhall, West Suffolk councils’ head of planning and growth will discuss the challenges surrounding housing regeneration on a World stage next month.
Steven Wood who works for Forest Heath District and St Edmundsbury Borough Councils will be among the guest speakers taking part in a 26 hour World Town Planning Day online conference on November 4 and 5.
The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) East of England and West Suffolk councils are jointly organising the region’s participation from the Green Duck centre in Western Way, Bury St Edmunds. It is the first time that West Suffolk has taken part in the annual on-line conference and the event will see Bury St Edmunds on a World stage alongside speakers from Buenos Aires, Argentina and Milan in Italy.
Mr Wood said: “I am delighted to be invited to speak at this prestigious annual event. Achieving housing delivery is complex. There is the need for growth whether for the young, old, individuals or families, balanced against the understandable wishes of a community not to see its dynamics changed. There are a multitude of Government planning processes to fulfil.
“Then there is the economy which is the single biggest factor in determining whether a house is actually built. It calls for some quite radical thinking and I am looking forward to outlining how we are tackling this issue here in West Suffolk.”
As well as the UK, Argentina and Italy, The World Town Planning Day Conference will feature speakers from Australia, France, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Kenya, Singapore, South Africa, Spain and the USA.
Richard Summers from the RTPI said: “Bury St Edmunds is well known to planners across the East of England and, indeed, St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s restoration of the West Front of the Abbey ruins won our planning award back in 2008.
“I am looking forward to hearing Steven discuss how West Suffolk is tackling the complexities of housing regeneration, and of course how these issues compare to the challenges faced in other countries across the globe. I will also be chairing one of the other on-line sessions as well as the local live gathering on each day at the Green Duck.”
