Welcome pack sent packing due to unwelcome costs
Thursday, 5th August 2010.
A welcome pack for newcomers to Haverhill has been abandoned as too costly by councillors after hearing the first 500 would cost nearly £1,000.
The idea had been put forward in April and three members of the St Edmundsbury Council's Haverhill Area Working Party had formed a sub-group to develop the idea with the town centre manager Tina Hanks.
Ms Hanks' report on progress so far was put before the working party at its meeting last week and members decided the idea was not worth pursuing.
Opinions on the value of a printed welcome pack varied, with some saying it would make newcomers feel welcome in the town and others feeling it would very quickly become out of date and be costly to update.
Some felt in the Internet age it would be easy for newcomers to find the information they needed from electronic sources.
