We were pretty awesome, insists skipper

DELIGHTED Haverhill skipper Steve Jones described his side as "pretty awesome" as they romped to a stunning 152-run victory against Abberton.
Having racked up 193 for 7 in the Division Four clash, Haverhill sliced through the opposition with Ross Nickerson finishing with figures of 4-4-0-4 as the visitors plunged to 41 all out.
"To be fair to them, Abberton weren't a bad side," said Jones. "But we had a bit of luck and then blew them away. I'm really pleased -- it's just what we wanted."
Haverhill won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket slightly affected by moisture which had got in through damaged covers. However, it did not stop Neil Winter scoring a priceless 80 to provide the backbone of the innings, with further support coming from Neil Williams (29) and Scott Webb 25.
Haverhill lost a flurry of late wickets in a rush for runs, but once Adam Smith had picked off both openers Abberton were always struggling.
Webb, with 3 for 8, and Nickerson ripped the heart out of their innings, aided by a brilliant catch from former Cambridge City and Haverhill Rovers goalkeeper Simon Youngs. "It was a superb catch," said Jones. "He went full-length to take a diving catch low to his left -- it was a real bottom-corner job."
