Warning to keep sheds and garages secure
Tuesday, 23rd February 2010.
A warning has gone out to people in and around Haverhill to make sure their sheds and garages are secure in the wake of some more burglaries.
Although the recent spate of burglaries of people's homes seems to have come to an end, garden sheds and garages are still being targeted, probably by opportunist thieves looking for any items of value, metal or even alcohol.
Between February 17 and 20 thieves broke into a shed at a property in Bumpstead Road, Haverhill, but nothing was taken.
Between 5pm on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday a insecure garage in Salisbury Court, Haverhill, was entered and a mountain bike stolen.
Motorbikes in the shed were chained up but the mountain bike was note and the door was only kept shut by a wheelie bin.
PCSO Claire Fuller of Haverhill police's Safer Neighbourhood Team, said it was important for householders to make sure sheds and garages were secured and proper security measures taken.
The thieves had been using cutters to get through padlocks, but they were also trying buildings to see if any were left unlocked.
Thefts in the Roman Way area recently saw alcohol taken from garages, and even bottles broken and alcohol drunk on the site.
"The message is don't be complacent, wherever you live," said PCSO Fuller.
