Warning after series of mobile phone thefts
Tuesday, 9th July 2013.
Police in Haverhill are warning people after a series of thefts of mobile phones in the street.
There have been three incidents in the past week where a member of the public has been stopped and asked if they could lend their phone for an emergency call.
The offender then claimed they could not get a good signal, walked a bit further away and then made off with the phone.
Sgt Stuart Manels said the incidents were unconnected, involving different offenders and in different places so it was clearly a new trick which people had picked up.
He urged people, if approached about an emergency call to offer to make it themselves, or hold the phone to the person’s ear, but not let go of it.
