Wednesday, 24th November 2004.
Haverhill’s War Memorial, commemorating those who from the town who died in service is to be restored if cabinet members at St Edmundsbury give the go-ahead.
The members are being urged to agree to the works which will costs up to £20,000 after lobbying from Haverhill Members of the Royal British Legion.
The current lettering of the names of the Great War Dead is painted and has on previous occasions faded and required renewal.
The latest repainting has left the current lettering, which was painted over previous lettering, in an uneven and enlarged state.
The names of World War II Dead are inscribed in stone plaques around the low walls of the monument. The lettering here does not match that of the main monument and has also faded.
Officers at the council have accepted that the monument is not up to a high enough standard to do justice to Haverhill’s War Dead.
The work involved is time consuming and requires appropriate stone to be sourced by the stone mason.
Of the go-ahead is given in Decembers cabinet meeting it will allow the refurbished monument to be rededicated as part of the commemorations of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.
