Vision 2031 lined up for adoption in September

Wednesday, 16th July 2014.

The planning inspector who examined the Vision 2031 documents has published his report, paving the way for the plans to be adopted as policy by St Edmundsbury Borough Council this autumn.

Roger Clews, who was appointed by the Secretary of State, held public hearings into the Vision 2031 documents covering Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill and the rural areas in January and February.

In his report, Mr Clews concludes that the Vision 2031 documents – with a few modifications – provide the right framework for growth in St Edmundsbury.

The examination in public, to decide if the planning documents complied with various legal criteria and had been properly prepared, followed three rounds of consultation and more than 80 roadshows and drop-in events to allow as many people as possible to comment on the suggested sites and proposals.

Cllr John Griffiths, leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said: “It’s a huge responsibility to plan how best to manage change and growth over two decades, allowing for the right balance of development while protecting the special character and environment of the borough.

"We are very pleased that the inspector has recognised that the Vision plans were properly prepared through partnership working.

“We are grateful to the inspector for his time and careful consideration of all the feedback which has helped us prepare plans which we believe will serve our residents and businesses well.”

The Vision 2031 plans will be considered by St Edmundsbury councillors at their cabinet meeting in September before going to full council for approval on September 23.

Cllr Terry Clements, cabinet member with responsibility for planning, said: “Thank you to everyone who, since our first round of consultation in spring 2011, has taken the time to attend presentations, visit roadshows and send in their thoughts and comments to help shape the Vision plans."

The inspector’s report and the documents containing the main modifications can be found on the St Edmundsbury website: www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk/vision2031
