Vintage vehicle rally comes to town again

Monday, 7th July 2014.

The Town Hall Car Park will again be parked up with a fascinating and somewhat unusual collection of vehicles on Sunday, July 13, between 10am-5pm as Haverhill plays host to the annual Historic Transport Rally.

Organised in conjunction with the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society (East Anglia), the event will see more than 150 vehicles of all shapes and sizes take over the entire expanse of the car park behind the Arts Centre, AXA and the shops along High Street.

Vintage cars, lorries, vans, fire engines, military vehicles and busses will all be on display - with many rare and in pristine condition coming from far afield.

New attractions for 2014 include two miniature traction engines and an old style children’s roundabout.

The Eastern National Preservation Society will be running a service around the town from the Town Hall Car Park every 30 minutes between 1pm and 4pm including rides on old-fashioned open top buses.

The Town Hall Car Park will be closed for the event and visitors will need to park in other town centre car parks.

At 11.30am more than 50 vehicles will leave on a road run taking in the villages of Bartlow, Ashdon, Saffron Walden, Radwinter, Hempstead, Steeple Bumpstead before travelling back on the A1057 to Haverhill. At 4.30pm trophies will be awarded by town mayor Roger Andre

The Arts Centre will be open for drink and refreshments and will be screening archive footage in the auditorium throughout the day.

Mike Hickford, secretary of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society, said: "We are delighted to be partnering with Haverhill Town Council on this project again.

"The hard standing on the site gives us an advantage over other rallies where ground conditions can make it difficult for vehicles. We have some of the most important examples of particular vehicles attending from all parts of the country."
