Vehicles seized by police in roadside operation

Monday, 4th July 2011.

Two vehicles were seized, one driver reported for no tax and 15 fixed penalty notices issued as part of a joint Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) and Roads Policing Unit (RPU) operation to combat the criminal use of the roads and nuisance vehicles last week.

The operation took place on Wednesday, when officers from Suffolk RPU were deployed at key roadside locations in Haverhill and a check site was located in the car park next to the cinema in Ehringshausen Way.

Partners assisted on the day, including UKBA, VOSA and HMRC and an officer from the dog unit with a drugs dog.

A total of 21 vehicles were stopped and of these 17 where subjected to a full check. Sixteen were fuel dipped and all passed, one vehicle was prevented from travelling any further due to a defective tyre (below legal tread) and five vehicles were given delayed prohibitions – two for defective steering, one for a defective ABS system, one for defective wheels nuts and one for excessive corrosion.

Two vehicles were seized, one due to no insurance and the other for a revoked licence. One person was reported for no tax and one driver was forced to rectify the lettering and numbering on an illegal number plate.

One person was given a street warning for possession of herbal cannabis. A further 15 fixed penalty notices were given for a variety of offences including no MOT, defective exhausts and illegal number plates.

Sgt Sarah Bartley of Haverhill SNT said: “The operation has been really successful but I am disappointed that drivers continue to ignore the law and drive unsafe vehicles.

"Operations like this are not only about enforcement but are to remind drivers to check their vehicles regularly and to get problems fixed to make sure they do not cause harm to other road users.”
