Vandals destroy fence in attack
Thursday, 3rd October 2002.
A WOMAN returned from spending two days in hospital to find the fence around her Haverhill home had been smashed by vandals.
Jayne Grant, of Falcon Close, said it was not the first incident in the area, with several cars being damaged and windows smashed in recent weeks.
Mrs Grant said her son was taking care of the house while she was away and had left it at around 12.30pm on Wednesday. When she got in at around 4.30pm, Mrs Grant discovered the top of the length of the fence alongside her home had been destroyed.
"I was disgusted by it. The fence looked really nice and I am going to have to pay to replace it. My son said it was fine when he left, but by the time I got home it had been completely smashed.
"They must have used a hammer or something. We have had a lot of vandalism, it all seems to be happening up here lately," Mrs Grant said.
A Suffolk police spokesman confirmed they had received a report of damage to the fence of around £100. Some incidents of criminal damage had been reported in various parts of the town, but they did not feel there was a spate of them on the Chalkstone estate.
Anyone who witnessed the damage being caused to Mrs Grant's fence or who has any other information, should contact police on (01284) 774100.
