Unveiling of sundial will mark centenary of the outbreak of war

Thursday, 31st July 2014.

The declaration of World War One is being commemorated a hundred years on to the day with the unveiling of a sundial at East Town Park in Haverhill on Monday.

The First World War began on August 4, 1914, and communities across the country are marking the centenary.

Haverhill's new commemoration sundial has been installed in a prominent area on the main thoroughfare between the car park and visitor centre.

The former butterfly garden area has been restored and restocked with a range of flowers, and the sundial and two stone tablets engraved with reflective poems have been installed in a strip of ornamental poppies. The brass sundial is mounted on a rustic stone column.

The work has been undertaken by St Edmundsbury Borough Council. The commemoration and event have been supported by Cllr Tony Brown and Cllr Gordon Cox.

Cllr Sarah Stamp, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Leisure, Culture and Heritage, said: “The conflict in the news is a daily reminder of what service to one’s country means.

"I am convinced that remembrance of the sacrifice made in both world wars sustains the peace we now enjoy. I am pleased that we continue to keep that commemoration relevant and alive in the heart of our communities.”

* There is to be a special commemorative service at St Mary's Church in Haverhill at 3pm on Sunday, August 10, to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War.
