UKIP top the poll in East region and St Edmundsbury

The UK Independence party topped the poll across the East region in last Thursday's Euro-election, and also topped the poll in St Edmundsbury.
East region result: UKIP 542,812; Con 446,569; Lab 271,601; Green 133,331; Lib Dem 108,010; An Independence from Europe 26,564; English Democrats 16,497; BNP 12,465; Christian Peoples Alliance 11,627; NO2EU 4,870. Turnout 36.19 per cent.
The Euro-elections are done by a proportional representation system, which means MPs are allocated from the parties' lists according to the number of votes cast.
After the count in Chelmsford on Sunday night, the numbers gave UKIP three MEPs, the Conservatives three and Labour one.
Elected were: 1 Patrick James O'Flynn (UKIP); 2 Vicky Ford (Con); 3 Richard Howitt (Lab); 4 Stuart Agnew (UKIP); 5 Geoffrey Van Orden (Con); 6 Tim Mark Aker (UKIP); 7 David Campbell Bannerman (Con).
The breakdown reveals that the Conservatives failed to top the poll in a national election in St Edmundsbury for the first time in its history.
St Eds result: UKIP 10,821; Con 9,225; Lab 3,971; Green 2,903; Lib Dem 1,504; An Ind 407; Eng Dem 366; Christian 266; BNP 216; NO2EU 83.
