UKIP picks up Haverhill East seat on county council
Friday, 3rd May 2013.
The UK Independence Party has won its first seat in Haverhill, with the triumph in yesterday's Suffolk County Council elections of Tony Brown in the Haverhill East and Kedington ward.
He defeated the Conservative candidate Alaric Pugh, in a seat formerly held by Anne Gower, who stood in the Haverhill Cangle ward this time, where the result is still awaited (1.10pm).
Mr Brown polled 708, or 39.15 per cent, with Mr Pugh second with 504 (25.04 per cent).
Labour candidate Roger Andre was third with 431 (21.41 per cent), and Ken Rolph, the Lib-Dem candidate, fourth with 235 (11.67 per cent).
Independent Gordon Cox polled just 55 votes, or 2.73 per cent.
The Clare result saw UKIP a well-supported second behind the Conservative Mary Evans, who polled 1,579 (46.26 per cent).
Stuart Letten, the UKIP candidate, polled 1,077 (31.56 per cent), way ahead of Haverhill Town Councillor Gary Stroud, who stood for Labour and got 434 votes (12.72 per cent).
Independent Tony Gearing polled 323 (9.46 per cent).
Across Suffolk there seems little change. Haverhill's recent failure in the popularity stakes, Cllr Guy MacGregor, was returned at Eye and Hoxne with nearly double the votes of the second-placed UKIP candidate.
