Two wins, two titles

Thursday, 2nd May 2002.

Haverhill is this week celebrating winning two national indoor bowls titles.

Steve Botten and Julian Poole landed the English Bowls Federation version of the pairs in Newark to add to the EBF outdoor title they won two years ago.

And the trio of Margaret Feeney, Mary Burton and Peggy Mizon became national EBF champions by landing the women’s rinks at the same venue.

Botten, who plays outdoors for Cambridgeshire’s Middleton Cup team, said: “It’s always good to win any title, but a national title is something special.

“Although some of the superstars (of Federation bowls) were not there this year, like Nicky Brett, who plays indoors for Ely, there were still some very good players and it was tough in most rounds.”

In the opening round they put out Durham duo, David Noble and Ian McIntosh, the new ElBA national under-25 singles champion.

In the semi-final they beat Peterborough pair, Malcolm Mitchell and Stuart Popple, representing Northants, 19-14, before winning the final against Lincs duo, Alan Dent and Peter Barnard, 22-17.

The Haverhill women’s trio swept to a 21-13 vctory over Northants champions Emma and Pat Reynolds and Mary Malton.

Representing North Essex, they stamped their authority early on with a sequence of eight shots in three ends, and never looked in any trouble as they eased their way to the title with one end of the scheduled 21 remaining.
