Two coincidental attacks not linked to 'The Punch Army'
Monday, 3rd March 2014.
Police have confirmed they find no links between two attacks in Haverhill over the last week and the current Facebook phenomenon 'The Punch Army', which claims to be a drug enforcement group.
There have been two attacks, coincidentally, police believe, at the same time and place on consecutive Friday nights, in which young men have suffered serious injury.
The first one, around 2am on Saturday, February 22, happened near the junction of Shaftesbury Court and Greenfields Way.
Two young men walking along Shaftesbury Court were attacked by a group of five or six, one suffering a broken jaw and the other less serious injuries.
Neither will say what the attack was about, although they identified an attacker, and they do not wish to press charges.
The attack only came tolight when police were investigating a second incident, at 2.15am on Saturday morning at the junction of Greenfields Way and Burton End.
Three young men were walking there when a group attacked them, but two ran away and left one behind who was battered with a fence post.
Haverhill'spolice chief, Insp Peter Ferrie, said it appeared the attackers were after one or both of the others and the man attacked was an innocent victim who just happened to be walking with them and wasn't streetwise enough to run away.
The victim was able to identify his main attacker who has now been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, but police are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed either attack, or who has any information which could help.
At present police say there is nothing to link the two incidents except the place and time.
They have coincided with a Facebook surge concerning the so-called Punch Army, which it was claimed was a group devoted to drug enforcement, but Insp Ferrie said latest intelligence was that this was just a group of young men who drank in the Suffolk Punch and had nothing to do with either incident.
