True grit in pursuit of clean roads

By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 9th November 2000.

A NEW high-tech gritter has been bought by Suffolk County Council to help keep roads clear in the Haverhill area this winter.
The council has bought three gritters, at a cost of £170,000, which are fitted with satellite tracking equipment able to monitor the amount being used and progress made on each gritting run.
Two of the gritters are specifically to deal with the urban areas of Haverhill and Bury St Edmunds as they are smaller and more suited to narrow streets.
The third is larger and designed to spread more salt on longer rural routes.
The investment follows a recent survey which showed gritting or roads was an important issue to Suffolk residents.
The council also has a fleet of 44 gritting vehicles and can call on 300 farmers and contractors with suitable equipment.
Farmers can join the scheme by ringing (01473) 583208.
Joan Girling, a member of the council's executive committee said: "This investment is part of an ongoing improvement strategy.
"Last year, we improved the service by increasing the number of roads given priority for gritting. All Class B roads now have the same level of salting service as Class A roads."
