Tributes For 'Happy' Teen Killed In Crash
By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 6th October 2005.
Tributes have been paid to a likeable teenager who died when his car hit a tree on Friday night.
Daniel Goldsmith, who was 18, died on a notorious stretch of road where a pensioner was seriously injured last year and which claimed the lives of three other teenagers five years ago.
Daniel, of Feltwell Place, Haverhill, was the driver of a silver Ford Fiesta travelling on the A1092 between Clare and Cavendish when it left the road and collided with a tree at around 10.30pm.
Daniel left Samuel Ward Upper School and Technology College in Haverhill last year to start work at Grampian Country Foods at Little Wratting.
His younger brother Lee, is still a pupil at the school and Daniel had many friends who still attend. Headteacher Howard Lay said staff and pupils had all been struck by the terrible tragedy.
"It has really hit the staff hard, he was such a really nice lad. He was really hard working and always very grateful for the support and help we gave him." he said.
"He went out of his way to thank people, he really did. He was always positive, cheerful and happy, it sounds like a cliche, but he really was a very nice person and everyone liked him. He had just got promotion as a foreman at Grampian and he was really pleased about that.
"It's just a terrible tragedy, I don't think any parent would ever get over it, it is just such a waste."
Jane Midwood, Suffolk County councillor for Clare, said it was a terrible tragedy and everyone's hearts must go out to the family and friends of the victim of the latest accident on the road.
She said: "It is a particularly dangerous bit of road. It is an A road but with problems very similar to a B road.
"There are a lot of bends and there are problems all the way along it. I think the county will look at it to see if any improvements can be made."
Suffolk Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle prior to it. Anyone with information should contact PC Paul Beddington at Bury roads policing unit on (01284) 774100
