Trekker’s death a “tragic accident”

Thursday, 6th September 2001.

A VERDICT of accidental death has been recorded on the son of the former Mayor of St Edmundsbury who fell 600 feet down a waterfall in Central America.

Andrew Wayman, 26, of Colts Hall, Cavendish, was the son of farmer John Wayman.
An inquest at Bury St Edmunds last week beard that Mr Wayman died instantly from a head injury after the fall in June, while he was taking part in a trek in Costa Rica.
He was working for an international organic farming organisation.

John Wayman told the inquest he was called by the leader of the trekking party, who told him Andrew had slipped over the edge of a wet, mossy path while observing the waterfall.

Naomi Gortan, an American traveller also on the trek, gave written evidence that she and two friends had warned Mr Wayman not to get too close to the edge of the waterfall, but he had then fallen.

Dr Peter Dean, Greater Suffolk Coroner, said it was clear from his serious injuries Mr Wayman would have died instantaneously and described the death as “a very, very tragic accident.”

“Clearly once this fall had happened there was very little Andrew could do to help himself.”
