Transport cash boost on cards
By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 23rd November 2000.
TRANSPORT in Haverhill is set for a boost after councillors announced an action plan of schemes.
A list of measures arising from the Transport Study carried out in the town earlier this year was prepared by officers of St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
A report to the council's Transport and Works Committee said it aimed to implement those given the highest priority over the next four years. The remainder were seen as a framework for investment over a five to 10-year period.
Councillors were asked to approve the high priority items, with initial investment concentrated on managing existing traffic to reduce levels of conflict.
These include a lorry management scheme directing unnecessary traffic away from the town centre and residential areas. This would include a signing review and possible weight restrictions in Camps Road and Crowland Road.
Also suggested for an early date was a Safely to School initiative to relieve traffic problems in School Lane and Burton End.
Other high priority items include improving bus services, walking and cycling facilities, parking provision, speed restrictions and support for the road linking Wratting Road and Withersfield Road.
The borough council has set aside £285,000 in its draft budget for next year for work arising from the transport study and Suffolk County Council had indicated there will be a significant increase in funding for Haverhill.
