Trading standards officers join police 'family'

Wednesday, 11th November 2009.

Trading standards officers in Suffolk have become the latest members of the extended policing family, thanks to the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme.

All field officers have signed up to the scheme, which allows employees of organisations to be granted selected policing powers by Suffolk Constabulary's Chief Constable.

Their responsibility has been extended to help address issues such as anti-social behaviour and they will also have the power to seize alcohol from those who are under 18 or buying it on their behalf.

Suffolk Assistant Chief Constable Stewart Gull said: "The Accreditation Scheme supports the work of our Safer Neighbourhood Teams and will further strengthen our links with the local community.

"The accreditation of the officers will increase public reassurance and provide greater resources to deal with crime reduction and anti-social behaviour, which greatly impact on people's lives."

Accredited people wear their own organisation's uniform and will have a nationally identified logo to signify that the individual is accredited, plus an identification card clearly setting out the specific powers the individual is trained and authorised to use.

The officers will now have the legal power to obtain an individual's name and address as well as issue fixed penalty notices. The scheme will also allow them to share relevant information with Suffolk Constabulary.

Any organisations interested in becoming Community Safety Accredited should contact David Kane on 01473 613500. The initiative is being run in partnership with Suffolk County Council and in collaboration with Norfolk Constabulary, to combat anti-social behaviour and specific issues being tackled by Safer Neighbourhood Teams.
