Track infill approved
By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 16th December 1999.
PLANNERS are raising no objection to a plan to infill a former railway cutting at Stoke by Clare but point out it could prejudice the possible re-instatement of the Cambridge to Sudbury railway line.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Planning Committee raised no formal objection to an application to fill in a 395-metre long shallow section of disused railway cutting at Chapel Street Farm.
The application will be determined by Suffolk County Council and borough planners agreed to raise no objection provided conditions were imposed relating to drainage, access and landscaping.
They also agreed to point out to the county council the implications for the railway campaign and the possible danger from heavy vehicles leaving the site.
Haverhill councillor Jeremy Farthing wrote to the committee opposing the plan and said granting it would fly in the face of all attempts to re-open the railway line.
The committee was told the county council would have to address concerns about access to the site.
It was pointed out that large sections of the former railway route had already been removed and re-developed and any re-instated route would have to be diverted from the original.
The council's Transport and Works Committee has recommended the authority makes a contribution towards a full feasibility study into re-opening the Haverhill to Cambridge section of the route but this has yet to be agreed by the full council.
