Town working party's debates to be opened to public

Thursday, 18th November 2010.

The Haverhill Area Working Party of St Edmundsbury Council is to be opened up to the public.

In a move to make the workings of the council as open as possible, members of the public will be welcomed to the meetings of various working parties, including the one that deals with Haverhill.

This is in addition to the council, cabinet, committees, sub-committees and working parties that are already open to the public.

Papers for all these meetings are distributed five working days before the meeting and can be found on-line at www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk , and click on council papers.

Decisions to spend money are made by cabinet and council and their work is monitored by the scrutiny committees.

All these meetings and the regulatory committees such as development control are open to the public.

Cabinet and scrutiny also ask other sub-committees and working parties to undertake work on their behalf and to make recommendations for consideration. To date some of these have been open to the public to attend, but others have not.

Cllr John Griffiths, leader of the council said: "The public have always been able to view the papers on-line, but because certain meetings have previously been closed, they couldn’t see the process by which decisions are made.

"Whatever the original reasons may have been for this, I am happy that from now on the public will be welcome to attend these formally constituted councillor meetings.”
