Town mayor receives toys for social services to distribute
Thursday, 12th December 2013.
Town mayor Cllr Roger Andre was at Haverhill Methodist Church for their festive Toy Service on Sunday, December 8.
Members of the congregation had been invited to bring new toys to present as gifts during the morning service.
These are being passed on to social services in town, and in turn are distributed to local families in need at Christmas time.
Receiving the gifts on behalf of social services, the mayor said that as people celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas time, they remember he came as The Light of the World and that these toys would bring light into the lives of children in Haverhill.
* Members of local churches were busy in various ways on the High Street for the Family Christmas Night in Haverhill last Friday.
Some who volunteer at Haverhill Food Bank chatted with late night shoppers and shared out free chocolates.
Town Pastors have become a familiar sight in Haverhill’s town centre on regular Friday nights and were a friendly presence as they mingled with the crowds, helping to make sure that the evening passed safely.
Members of Haverhill Methodist Church had a great time handing out mince pies and serving hot spiced fruit punch from their stand.
Play leaders from the Methodist Church Playgroup had a table for children to make Christmas trees and Rudolf decorations.
Methodist minister the Rev Nigel Bishop commented on the atmosphere of good will that was evident in the town. “An event like this shows the community of Haverhill at its best.
"The night really highlights the valuable work that goes on by so many ordinary, faithful volunteers in the town in all sorts of organisations.
"Hats off to the Town Council for co-ordinating such a successful night, made all the more memorable by the spectacular fireworks display!”
