Town Council Under Scrutiny
Friday, 9th April 2004.
TWO town councillors are under investigation, following a number of complaints made to the Standards Board for England by a fellow councillor.
Complaints against Haverhill town mayor Jackie Rudd and Gerry Kiernan, who is also a St Edmundsbury Borough and Suffolk county councillor, by Coun Mabon Dane have been referred to an Adjudication Panel for further investigation.
Four other complaints, two about Coun Dane, a second against Jackie Rudd and one against Coun Nick Whelan, were not found to warrant further investigation.
The complaint against Coun Kiernan alleges that he used his position improperly in relation to the purchase of a defibrillator for the town from his Suffolk County Council Locality Fund.
The complaint against Coun Rudd alleges that she failed to declare an interest when voting on plans for a new Tesco store close to where she lived.
A spokesman for the Standards Board of England said complaints referred to the Adjudication Panel for England could take up to six months to be investigated.
If upheld, it had the power to disqualify councillors for up to five years.
