Town Centre Success Is Given Top Priority

Development of Haverhill town centre has come under the scrutiny of councillors and representatives of the local business community.
The Haverhill Area Working Party set up by St Edmundsbury Borough Council last August to take an overview of Haverhill issues, held a meeting last week with members of Enterprise 2000 and Haverhill Chamber of Commerce.
A presentation was made by Suffolk County Council's Environment and Transport Department on the draft Haverhill Local Transport Action plan, outlining a programme of work to improve access to the town centre area for both pedestrians an vehicles.
Many of these schemes have been scheduled into the plan and the working party will comment on it when it becomes available in the very near future.
The second part of the meetin focused on retail issues in the town centre. Business representatives were told that the working party's key priority was working towards the success of the town centre and it would be working, side by side, towards solving some of its problems. A review of these issues and the next steps will be discussed at another meeting in April or May.
Coun Jeff Stevens, chairman of the working party, said: "I am pleased that the meeting with representatives of businesses in the town was fruitful and that we all share many similar views about the problems facing the town centre. The working party is taking a positive approach to tackling these problems and I am pleased that it is forming strong links with businesses and organisations that help to promote the prosperity of the town."
