Town centre gets new police officer
Thursday, 30th September 2010.
There will be a new PC on the beat in Haverhill town centre from next week, the first to be specifically dedicated to that area for two years.
PC Richard Oldroyd is joining Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team from Monday, and will have responsibility for the idustrial estates as well.
PC Oldroyd is not a stranger to Haverhill, currently being a member of the rural area response team based here.
Aged 28, he started his police career in Haverhill six-and-a-half years ago and has been a response officer for all that time.
Now he is looking forward to the new challenge of working in the safer neighbourhood team.
"There is much more of a community slant on this work," he said. "Whereas in response teams, you turn up, deal with an incident and pass it on to others, in the SNTs it is more about larger town issues and problem-solving."
PC Oldroyd intends to get out on patrol and follow up contacts made by the town centre PCSO, Les Scott, who will be working with him.
"I'll also be doing stuff with businesses, working to reduce shoplifting, where we have seen an increase lately, and to increase security," he said.
PCSO Scott welcomed his new colleague saying it would be a good thing to have a fresh pair of eyes on the scene.
