Tory majority at county hall slashed

The Suffolk County Council elections last week saw the Conservatives’ majority at county hall slashed from 35 to just three.
The full make-up of the council is now Conservative 39 (-16), Labour/Labour Co-operative 15 (+11), UKIP 9 (+8), Lib-Dem 7 (-4), Independent 3 (+1), Green 2 (no change). Total 75.
The turnout across the county was just over 30 per cent. In Haverhill Cangle it was 23.5 per cent and in Haverhill East and Kedington it was 28.4 per cent.
Haverhill’s new UKIP councillors, Julian Flood and Tony Brown, will sign their declarations of office this week.
On May 23 the full council will meet for the first time and elect a leader. Until then the current leader, Cllr Mark Bee, remains in the job.
