Top mix of entertainment in arts centre's new programme

Wednesday, 22nd December 2010.

Haverhill Arts Centre has announced its new season's programme for the first part of 2011 and it offers top entertainment in a mix of big name acts, music, comedy, drama, family and community events.

New to the Arts Centre are the larger than life stars of LDN wrestling (Thurs, Feb 3) who will be bouncing into the centre, and off each other. There’s a special ticket price for families and an early bird offer if you book before January 10.

Other great family entertainment includes four fantastic children’s shows: The Balloon Gardener (Mon, Feb 21) which promises loud pops and flashes of lightning and comic genius as Danny the Wild Balloon Tamer attempts to grow his own latex; Around and Around (Fri, Feb 25), a performance and workshop especially for children who have additional needs; The Way Back Home (Tues, Apr 12), the touching story of a little boy and an alien stuck on the moon who are both trying to get home, based on Oliver Jeffers popular book; and Little Red Robin Hood (Tues, Apr 19) a fast and funny ‘mash-up’ of two classic tales.

50s and 60s fans are very well catered for this season. There’s Blue Bayou, a Tribute to Roy Orbison, the Legend (Sat, Apr 30) with a special guest tribute to Johnny Cash; The Everly Brothers & Friends Tribute Show (Fri, Feb 4); The Bootleg Sixties (Thurs, Feb 24) are back by popular demand with a new show of sounds and memories of the swinging sixties; Tony McPhee and The Groundhogs (Sat, Apr 16) the British Blues band famous for their album Split; plus C’mon Everybody (Sat, Apr 9) an action-packed show featuring the hits of Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and more.

Other musical treats include entertainer Peter Gill with The Golden Age of Musical Satire (Thurs, Feb 17), cheekily subtitled 100 years of taking the p***, which draws on a back catalogue from the likes of Flanders and Swann and Victoria Wood, and for everyone who likes a good show-tune, there’s Broadway And Beyond, (Sat, Mar 5) creating a medley of the most popular musicals including Miss Saigon, Oklahoma! and The Producers.

Courtney Pine (Sun, Mar 27), the world-famous saxophonist and jazz musician presents his latest project Europa which draws influence from his years touring on the continent. Tickets will sell fast so book early for this one.

More jazz is on hand with the queen of the 1980s, Hazel O'Connor and the Bluja Project (Fri, Apr 15) and when Duncan Galloway of the Pasadena Roof Orchestra plays with his All Star Band (Sun, Apr 10).

After the recent success of the Folk Icons season at the Arts Centre comes two troubadours of the folk scene Spiers and Boden (Sun, Apr 3).

Flamenco guitarist Juan Martin (Sun, Feb 6) brings a welcome taste of southern Spain to the dark days of winter, the eternally youthful cockney duo Chas and Dave (Sat, Mar 12) make a return and Solid Gold Country Legends (Fri, Feb 11) presents an all-singing, all-dancing, foot-stomping ho-down.

Pull on your drainpipes and blow the dust of your air guitar for Limehouse Lizzy (Sat, Apr 2) and start quaffing the Red, Red Wine for the UB40 tribute Rats In The Kitchen (Sat, Feb 19).

Should classical music be more to your taste Arnold Sinfonia’s Music For A String Orchestra (Sun, Apr 17) features Mikhail Nemtsov on cello.

If you are a doer rather than a watcher you could head along to one (or both) of Steve Lockwood’s popular Harmonica Workshops (Sat, Feb 19 and Sat, Apr 16); enter Riffed, the Haverhill Battle of the Bands 2011 (heats, Sat, Feb 5, and Sat, Feb 12) or take part in DanceEast’s Salsa Workshop (Sat, Mar 19).

In addition to its strong music programme, the Arts Centre is well-known for its comedy - all the top comics have been to Haverhill at one point or another, including Jimmy Carr, Andy Parsons and Kevin Bridges.

You can see tomorrow’s comedy stars today at the Monkey Nuts Comedy Club (Sun, Jan 30, and Fri, Mar 25).

Barry Cryer with his new show Butterfly Brain (Sat, Mar 19) is back with all the wit you’d expect from the treacle-voiced panellist from Radio 4’s I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.

He sold out last time he visited the Arts Centre so book early to avoid disappointment.

In the Virginia Monologues (Thurs, Mar 3) Virginia Ironside, celebrated broadcaster and agony aunt takes to the stage in a one-woman show which is a funny and frank look at life in your sixties.

Theatre lovers can appreciate two gripping dramas: Eastern Angles’ Up And Out O’ The Sea, (Wed, Mar 16) a tale about the Suffolk coastline and a 30-year-old unsolved mystery; and Hull Truck Theatre’s dramatisation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover (Thurs, Apr 21), arguably the most controversial book of the 20th century. Hull Truck’s recent tour of Teechers went down a storm so expect a production of quality.

As always, community groups are well represented at Haverhill Arts Centre: Samuel Ward Business and Technology College present talent show Stars In Their Eyes (Thurs, Mar 31); Stoke College imagine a 1960s-set Romeo And Juliet in R&J (Tues, Mar 8, and Thurs, Mar 10) and Haverhill Keyboard Club continue to hold their regular performances (last Tuesday of the month) as do the Haverhill Flower Club, the Silverliners Line Dancing Club, and Tea Dances.

The popular Haverhill Silver Band present a joint concert, Hadstock and HYAC Bands Entertain (Sun, Febr 20) and Centre Stage Company kick the new season off with a cornucopia of truly groanworthy jokes in their slapstick extravaganza, Puss In Boots (Fri, January 21 to Sun, Jan 23, and Thurs, Jan 27 to Sat, Jan 29)

As well as the live events the Arts Centre continues to show blockbuster and art house cinema. Tickets for all these events are on sale now and can be purchased from the Arts Centre box office 01440 714140 or the website www.haverhillartscentre.co.uk
