Top level meeting aims to improve county's broadband
Thursday, 9th June 2011.
Senior community leaders in Suffolok will be getting together tomorrow to put together cash for to improve the county's broadband.
An extraordinary meeting of Suffolk County Council’s cabinet is to be held to agree future funding for the broadband project.
The cabinet will consider a recommendation that Suffolk County Council should commit up to £10million over four years.
The meeting will include the county’s leading councillors, MPs and business figures.
At the meeting, the cabinet will also discuss Suffolk’s current bid, the feedback it had from Broadband Delivery UK and an action plan to secure the necessary funding as soon as possible.
Council leader Mark Bee said: “A financial commitment of this size would send a clear message to BDUK and Government that we are serious about bringing improved broadband to Suffolk.
"It is also vital that we involve all of our partners and demonstrate that the whole of the county – business, MPs, district and borough councils and the community are committed to making this work.
"Although this money would come from the county council this is a team effort and we will need to draw in other funding not just from BDUK but also telecom providers and other public sector grant opportunities."
Andy Wood, chair of the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership and chief executive of Adnams, said: "This recommendation emphasises the passion we all have for bringing improved broadband to Suffolk.
"Building on the hard work already done and the quality of the current bid I believe this can only strengthen our case."
