Toddler's accident throws spotlight on High Street

Saturday, 20th February 2010.

Traffic dangers in Haverhill High Street were brought into focus again yesterday (Friday) when a two-year-old child was hurt in an accident with a car.

The incident happened outside Dorothy Perkins just after 12.30pm, and just three days after town councillors warned the current situation represented real dangers to parents and children.

The little boy was walking with one of his parents when he slipped away and ran towards the carriageway.

The parent called him back but was unable to prevent him being hit by a car driven by a disabled woman driver.

Police said the driver was perfectly entitled to be driving up the street under the current regulations.

The paramedic and ambulance were called and the boy was treated but fortunately had not been seriously injured.

The driver and her passenger were very shocked by the accident, a police spokesman said.

At Tuesday evening's meeting of Haverhill Town Council members expressed their concern that nothing was being done about parking and unauthorised driving in the high street.

Cllr Paul McManus said: "It is unbelievably dangerous with mothers and prams nearly being knocked down."

The current regulations, imposed by the highways authority - Suffolk County Council - are not properly advertised in the signage so cannot legally be enforced by the police, whose attempt at a recent crackdown had to be halted after one day.
