Thieves strip stranded taxi in three hours

Thursday, 9th May 2002.

A taxi driver’s car was stripped bare after he left it in a quiet layby for three hours.

Terry Jenkinson’s luck started to turn sour when he ran out of petrol in the middle of the night.

He carefully parked his new Ford Galaxy in a layby near Horseheath and walked off to buy petrol.

When he returned the seven-seater car had been plundered. A gang of thieves had swiftly done £5,000 damage.

The took:
* the dashboard, indicators stalks, cigarette lighters, switches and speedometer
* all the seats foot mats and mirrors
* all four aluminium wheels and the spare tyre
* the bonnet and much of the body work

Mr Jenkinson said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw it lying in it’s belly. It was such a shock I could see the wheels had all gone, but it came home to me what had happened when I saw the dashboard was missing.

“It was a fairly new car with tinted windows and it was in good condition. Now it is just a wreck. It just shows you can’t leave anything anywhere with out it getting stolen.”

To add insult to injury Mr Jenkinson then had to walk home to Haverhill.

Police investigating the raid believe it was carried out by a gang of professional thieves operating with a van.

Anyone who saw the car being stripped, off the A1307 between 1 and 4 am list Wednesday should call police on 01223 358966 quoting crime reference number 28847.
