Thieves clean out used oil from Queen Street takeaways
Monday, 12th August 2013.
Police are appealing for information after a spate of cooking oil thefts from take-aways in the Haverhill area.
The latest incident took place between 9pm on Friday and 8am on Saturday from a take-away on Queen Street. The offenders gained entry by breaking the padlock on the gates of the compound where the oil was being stored.
Over the weekend, five similar incidents also took place in the Queen Street area of Haverhill where oil has been stolen. Police are reminding people to store oil securely, be vigilant and to report anything suspicious.
Anyone with information relating to these incidents should contact PC Robert Bunton at Haverhill on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
In each case thieves entered the rear yards of Smart Fish Bar, USA Chicken, Starburger and Top Chef and stole used oil stored in 200-litre drums and awaiting collection for recycling.
The drums were not full, however, with one only containing as little as ten litres.
The most recent attack, at Brownies pie and mash bar, saw the thieves break in but not take anything.
The oil is thought likely to have been stolen for re-use or sale as fuel for diesel vehicles.
