Friday, 5th August 2011.
Haverhill Tennis Club held two successful tournaments as part of the county tour last week.
Some of the younger children who took part in the eight and under event were children from some of the school clubs that the club runs at local primary schools.
After some exciting matches the quarter-final line-up was Sam Fowle, Joshua Webb, Matt Magin, Connor Webb, Luke Marsh, Jason Butler, Harry Eade and Thomas Parrett.
Joshua Webb bt Sam Fowle 10-4, Matt Magin bt Connor Webb 10-5, Luke Marsh bt Jason Butler 10-7 and Thomas Parrett bt Harry Eade 10-2.
In the semi-finals Matt Magin bt Joshua Webb and Luke Marsh bt Thomas Parrett. Joshua Webb did exceptionally well to beat the more experienced Thomas Parrett in the third/fourth play-off.
Luke Marsh bt Matt Magin 10-2 in the final with some inspirational tennis. Club Coach Robert Jeffs said: “Luke is the only eight and under player I’ve ever seen win points from serving and volleying”.
The Red Tournament was run by some of the club's best junior players. Thanks go to Joshua Dashwood, Rachel Jeffs, Abi Cartwright-Thomas and Tristram Walsh.
Nine boys took part in the 14 and unders with some of the players still young enough to play for the 12 and unders category.
Aaron Thorne proved to be too strong for his younger opponents, beating Hector Corey and David Scott in straight sets.
Sam Howard (12&U) played some great tennis to beat Justin Hall and Daniel Marsh also in straight sets.
The third group of players had some very tight matches with Jack Young needing three sets to beat his younger opponent Jack Eade.
Andreas Kitsis finished second in this group but had the best record of the second-placed boys, to make his way into the semi-final.
Here he met the more experienced Aaron Thorne who beat him 4-1, 4-2. In the second semi-final the younger Sam Howard produced an excellent display to beat Jack Young who also played some great tennis to make it a very entertaining match.
The final was a long match with some lengthy rallies but Sam eventually won 5-3, 4-2. The competitors all played in the spirit of the game and were a credit to their parents and club.
