Tenants given the chance to change their lives

Wednesday, 11th April 2012.

Havebury Housing Partnership is offering its tenants the chance to learn new skills and perhaps even change their lives, through a number of free training courses, two of which are next week in Haverhill.

The affordable houding provider, which manages 6,000 homes in Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill, has a full programme of practical skills sessions taking place from now until next February.

Courses, which include healthy living and basic repairs, are all run by specialist trainers.

Havebury chief executive Karen Mayhew said there are places remaining on two sessions next week – a two-day motivational workshop and a course which helps participants get the best energy deal. Both are taking place at Havebury’s offices in Manor Road, Haverhill.

She said: “The energy deal session, which is run in partnership with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and is sponsored by Ofgem, will help tenants save money on their fuel bills. They will learn how to choose the best tariff and find out if they are entitled to any savings.

“The motivational course is targeted at those tenants seeking employment or perhaps even a change in employment, helping them to improve their work ethic, life skills and self-esteem.

"Participants will be taught how to build positive, achievable goals and willbe shown ways to help them move towards their targets in life.”

One Havebury tenant who knows just how effective the motivational course can be is previous participant Kelvin Neary, who says the course completely changed his outlook on life.

“It builds up your self-esteem and makes you realise that you make excuses for not having a job,” said the 38-year-old, who has been unemployed for nearly eight years.

“Before I did the course, I didn’t care that other people’s taxes were paying for my Jobseeker’s Allowance.

"But now I’m volunteering in a charity shop so I feel like I’m earning it. Thanks to the course, I realise that the only person stopping me getting a job was me.”

The motivational course takes place on April 18 and 19 from 9.30am to 4.30pm, while the energy session is being held on April 19 from 11am to 12.30pm.

Other sessions taking place include a five-week employability course, financial awareness and how to spot a scam. The full list of courses can be viewed at www.havebury.com.

Transport can be offered to anyone who may not be able to make their way to the courses, and there is a small budget available to cover childcare costs.

Mrs Mayhew said: “Our aim is to make sure all our tenants have access to the information and essential skills they need.

"While these courses can be a really good way of helping improve tenants’ chances of finding a job, they can also be great for anyone who wants to learn, and perhaps make some more friends too. We hope lots of people will take advantage of these courses throughout the year.”
